Fundraising Cattle Drive a Success for Horses and Hope
Horses and Hope, a breast cancer initiative of the Office of Kentucky First Lady Jane Beshear and the Kentucky Cancer Program which provides breast cancer awareness, education, and early detection to women working in Kentucky’s equine industry, was recently the beneficiary of a fundraiser hosted by noted veterinarian Dr. Kirk Shiner and his wife Kris at their McCoy, Colorado cattle ranch. Six horsewomen “Saddled up for Hope” and spent three days helping move cattle down from the higher elevations of the Colorado mountains to lower pastures. The funds raised from the trail ride will go towards the new Horses and Hope Mobile Cancer Screening Van that will expand screenings to both men and women for seven types of cancer, including breast cancer.
In addition to the satisfaction of raising money for such a worthy cause, the group of horsewomen,”Latigos and Lace,” had a truly unique and life-changing experience that was both exciting and challenging. There was an atmosphere of support, cooperation and bonding that left an indelible impression in everyone’s mind that won’t be forgotten. The ladies are currently planning riding adventures for next year and hope to include more horsewomen who are interested in supporting Horses and Hope.
“The horses were amazing athletes,” said participant Cathie Parke. “My horse went to his knees going up a steep incline after some cattle. He dug in, powered himself up and made it to the top of the ridge. It was really awesome to feel and see my horse zero in on a wayward cow much like a bird dog in the field.”
